Ohio Michigan Indiana Area
Special Local Users Group Meeting
May 4-5, 2009
At the Cisco Systems in Richfield, Ohio
Good day:
May 5th will be a day of workshops at the 2009 OMI A
SLUG conference. We are featuring Terry Fox of Terry Fox & Associates in a four
hour signal and power integrity lecture. After the lecture from Mr. Fox, Mentor
will do a hands-on workshop on their power integrity product, HyperLynx PI.
Terry Fox is a Signal Integrity - EMC consultant from the Seattle area. In
addition to consulting, Terry has taught hundreds of SI-EMC classes through out
North America. Terry is a passionate advocate for “Right the First Time Design.”
The half day presentation will review basic requirements for predictable Signal
Integrity performance and focus on the requirements of proper Power Integrity
design. “Right the First Time Design” depends upon using structures with
predictable behavior. Prior to the advent of sophisticated Power Integrity
tools, widely spaced planes and individually by-passed devices left huge areas
of uncertainty. Power plane impedance resonances could wreak havoc with
seemingly well designed systems. A poorly placed via could result in substantial
Common Mode EMI causing an otherwise solid product to fail radiated emissions
tests.
Terry will explain the requirements of “Right the First Time” design practices
in the context of commonly used power structures and the tools which are
available to predict the performance of those structures.
Monday afternoon Mentor Graphics will present a hands-on workshop devoted to the
new HyperLynx PI power integrity software. Running multiple power planes in
order to support the many voltages that are now demanded by processors, FPGAs
and ASICs has resulted in smaller power plane areas and more neck down points.
This has generated areas of current limitations and voltage drops. HyperLynx PI
can simulate these conditions and lead the way to appropriate bypass placement.
Power integrity tools can promote stable circuits and help eliminate
intermittent errors in your signals due to insufficient power sources.
Warning! There are a limited number of laptops available for
the hands-on HyperLynx PI workshop. At two per machine the first 24 people to
register for the HyperLynx PI workshop will be seated at computers. The rest
will be filled in as can be handled.
May 4th, Mentor Graphics and Oasis will be showing us what is new and
cool in their Expedition Enterprise software and will be presenting a roadmap
for the future of their products. The 2007.5 release is scheduled for delivery
so come and learn how the changes in this release will affect you and your
company.
More and more designs are using programmable parts so we believe that it is time
to take a new look a ModelSim. Now that you have generated at description of
your design, you need to do verification and debug of the design through
simulation. But your design verification may benefit further by the use of
assertion based checker or you may need to meet DO-254. Is it time for you to
use Questa for HDL verification?
SystemVision allows system engineers and engineers from multiple disciplines to
communicate, simulate, and optimize designs for first-pass success. SystemVision
provides a virtual lab for design and analysis of analog, mixed signal, digital,
and electro-mechanical designs. Explore concepts, specify system functionality,
investigate architectural partitions, and integrate implementation of
electronics, sensors/actuators, controls, and embedded software, all in one
virtual environment.
Automate the PCB documentation process, while increasing detail, streamlining
distribution, and easing the entire process with the use of DownStream’s
BluePrint software. Also, we will have one company’s installation story.
We will be having discussion session on translating between Design Capture to
DxDesigner and what people’s experiences have been. Come with your stories, your
questions and your suggestions.
Our Keynote will cover Mentor Graphics SupportNet and the Communities site.
Please remember to bring your USB drives to the OMI A SLUG conference so that the proceeding can be loaded into them on Wednesday. We have a limited amount of drives left and those will be made available to people that did not get one last year.
Yes, we have a list.
This is the sixth year that Cisco Systems, in Richfield, Ohio, is hosting the
OMI A SLUG conference. We would like to thank Jeff Porter and his group for
again affording us the use of their excellent facility!
If you have not already done so, you should take a look at the Mentor Users
Group WEB site. If you choose to register at the MUG site, you should sign up
for the e-mail notifications that cover any of the forums that you use. The threaded discussions on problems and solutions of Mentor software
products and technique tips that can make your life easier.

Agenda
The Workshops
Right the First
Time
Featuring Industry Expert - Terry Fox
The Tuesday workshops will provide a
look at “Right the First Time” EMI control, as well as a hands-on workshop for
the HyperLynx PI tools. Both of these are designed to reduce costs by
eliminating multiple design cycles from projects.
