Ohio Michigan Indiana Special Local Users Group Meeting October 17-18,
2006
At the Cisco Systems in Richfield, Ohio
October 17th will be a day of workshops at the 2006 OMI A SLUG conference.
We are featuring Lee Hill of SILENT in a three hour EMI workshop. In
conjunction with
the EMI workshop, Mentor will do a presentation of their EMI design rule
checker, Quiet Expert. Also, Kendell Hiles of Mentor will be doing
a two hour workshop on the Automation Programming interface. This
interface will allow you to write programs that act on your Mentor designs to
extract data, to manipulate objects and to automate tasks.
On Oct. 18th, Mentor Graphics will be showing us what is new and cool in their
Expedition Enterprise software and will be presenting a roadmap for the future of
their products. The 2005.1 release has been delivered so come and learn how the
changes in this release will affect you and your company. Attendees can ask
questions about the future of BoardStation and where Mentor sees it in their
product line up.
At the last U2U conference it became apparent that getting access to DxDatabook
was one of the main reasons that people were thinking of making the move from
the Design Capture - Expedition flow to the DxDesigner - Expedition flow.
DxDatabook could be used not only to get information about parts from the
central Mentor library, but also to extract information from corporate
databases. In this vain Ahmed Hamza of Mentor showing us how to attach
DxDatabook to an ODBC compliant database.
The boss always wants the board routed faster. Mentor as an answer for
that: Xtreme AR. Now you can have multiple autorouters working on a PCB
design at the same time. If your dead line is king, Xtreme AR may be the
product for you. Charles Pfeil will be presenting.
Some day there will be an elegant way to automatically place components into a
printed circuit design with a usable pattern. DesignAdvance has been working on
a product that may be the future of this software category. This
session should offer a fascinating look into intelligent component placement
that is assisted by next generation software.
More and more designs are using programmable parts so we believe that it is time
to take a new look a ModelSim. Now that you have generated at description
of your design, you need to do verification and debug of the design through
simulation.
You are running DxDesigner - Expedition now but you still have OrCAD, P-CAD and
Protel databases for current products. Expedition does not come with any
translators to import boards from these CAD systems but you would like to move
those designs into Expedition. This session will
cover how to use the PADS translators to move these databases into DxDesigner
and P-CAD and Protel layouts into Expedition. Avid Technologies will
show us how.
This is the third year that Cisco Systems, in Richfield, Ohio, is hosting the
OMI A SLUG conference. We would like to thank Jeff Porter and his group for
again affording us the use of their excellent facility!
If you have not already done so, you should take a look at the Mentor Users
Group WEB site. If you choose to register at the MUG site, you should sign up
for the e-mail notifications that cover any of the forums that you use. The Exploders are
threaded e-mail discussions on problems and solutions of Mentor software
products and technique tips that can make your life easier.

Agenda
The EMC Workshop by Lee Hill
Mentor Graphics will be presenting a three-hour EMI workshop by Lee Hill of SILENT.
Lee Hill is a noted lecturer on the subject of EMI and Mentor Graphics is offering
our membership a great opportunity to learn from his expertise. With the IC manufacturers
shrinking die geometries and producing ever faster parts, it seems that everybody
is now or soon will be designing high speed boards with the resulting EMI problems. Come,
see and learn from this industry expert.
Electronic
Product Design and Retrofit for EMC
EMC is the study of
what is not on the schematic.
In this session, Lee Hill,
founder of Silent Solutions
(www.silent-solutions.com), will
provide an abbreviated 3 hour version of his 3-day seminar on designing for EMC
- a unique blend of applications, hardware demonstrations, and supporting theory
for both beginning and advanced students.
What You Will Learn:
- Identify noise sources and
apply solutions to EMC problems.
- Distinguish between useful
and invalid EMI "rules of thumb" and design hints from books and application
notes.
- Recognize and reduce the
efficiency of the most common EMI antenna
structures that cause emissions and immunity problems.
- Information will be
provided regarding an upcoming 3-day EMC seminar in Pittsburgh.
Intended Audience:
This seminar will provide circuit design, PCB, and EMC engineers with a
high-level introduction that will help in the recognition and resolution
of common electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems in PC boards,
connectors, and cables
