The School of Engineering at VCU was established in 1996 and graduated the first class of seniors in Electrical and Computer Engineering in May of 2000. VCU joined the Mentor Higher Education Program in 1998 and has been using the Mentor Graphics tools extensively in many of the EE classes. From the sophomore level, where DA, Quicksim, Accusim and ModelSim are used to introduce the concepts of schematic design and simulation, hardware description languages, and transistor fundamentals, to the senior year where ICStation, ModelSim, and QSPro are used to implement capstone projects, the tools have been made an integral part of the program. This paper will present the trials, tribulations, and successes of building a new engineering program from the ground up that incorporates the Mentor tools. Bio: Dr. Robert H. Klenke has been an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Virginia Commonwealth University since joining the faculty in 1998. He has published more than 30 journal and conference papers and is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a member of Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Beta Pi. Dr. Klenke received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute in 1982, and his M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1989 and 1992, respectively.
