BIG S/W management at a BIG 10 institution

The University of Wisconsin has adopted a number of techniques to systematize the management of a large number of engineering software applications received each year. These include central license file management, "spoofed" startups, non-root and watchdog license restarts, usage monitoring, installation notes, fake installs, and "first-use" scripts. While the university uses AFS (the Andrews File System) in Unix and the techniques have evolved over a period of several years, all results sprang from the adoption of some guiding philosophies which will port to other systems. Presentation will follow a typical installation path. Useful also for Mentor personnel who'd like to know how the other side thinks.
